13 Months

Have you
had good, fair, to a not so good experience with a builder or contractor?
Or even a furniture manufacturer?

I was doing a clients home here in Florida
across the street from the ocean in Delray Beach.
It was taking forever to finish this home.
We had to get the herring bone walnut floors done right,
the insets in the marble done.
And done right.

Expecting work 'done right' in South Florida is somewhat of an oxymoron.
Sorry Florida.
Only if you are using 'HIGH END' manufacturers, contractors, workrooms, and builders
can you expect good to perfect work.
And I need  'perfect' work'
Just remember there is no such thing as 'a deal,'
or an unbelievably great price on something that requires any sort of skill.

Back to the builder....
beside the fact that he was a smug spoiled brat who was in his family's business...
the building of this house went on for 2 years.
It may have been 10,000 sq. ft.
but C'mon!!!!

{he had the same size crew working on the Delray house}
He kept telling me fibs daily about this and that.
He said; " It takes a long time to do a home like this and of this size."
So...
I said;
" Okay...You are a builder, and your family has been in the business
here in Florida over 25 years. Right?"
 "That's right!!!"
said the smug little 40 something brat.

I said;
"I am sure that you know it only took 13 months to build the Empire State building. Right?"

You might ask me; "SO, what did he say then?"

He said nothing. Like most men when they are in the wrong.

DID YOU KNOW
that the Empire State build was built in about 13 months?

Happy Weekend and Reader Questions Answered

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

HAPPY FRIDAY!

house to home

This is probably not an image that one would typically post smack dab in the middle of winter (actually it's probably not even the middle yet) but I couldn't resist.  It's snowing here again today, as it has almost every day for the last month, and the snow is white, pretty and all that, but this image makes me dream of the days when we'll see scenes like this again. :-) And how pretty is the honeysuckle in this image???!!!

On another note. I had some questions on the image above from this post.  I've already exchanged e-mails with the readers who asked the questions, but I thought some of you may want to know the answers too...

Question 1 -  Last week you showed a beautiful C picture, do you  know the author or how I could get in touch with the gallery?

Answer:  When she first asked this question, I could have sworn I had seen someone do a post on the origin of this sign but could not remember who for the life of me.  A few google searches turned up The Zhush's post, and she's got all the answers for you!  Find out all the details here...

Question 2 - Where can I find this coffee table?

Answer:  I think I found it at Jayson Home and Garden and it actually comes in three different sizes, but it's definitely not in the budget for the reader that asked (or for me).

This one from Wisteria is similar, but it only comes in white and is more of a side table size (although you could use two or three for a coffee table).

Does anyone else have any ideas/sources for this table?

Dining Chairs and Tables - Numbers you can use

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG Midwest Living Greg Scheidemann

I've done posts about dining chairs several times (usually in regard to mismatching them!), but I realized the other day that we've never really talked about some of the more practical details. It might come in especially handy if you are mixing and matching your table and chairs and buying from various sources. So just in case you're headed out to your flea market this weekend, this post includes a few numbers that might help. They're just general guidelines, but hopefully something some of you can use.

Round tables are really great for conversation and, depending on the room, sometimes they just fit the space better. I have one and I love it.

Thank you, too, to those who commented on my post yesterday! I was thinking there was a slim possibility I wasn't the only one :-), but I really appreciated the confirmation.

What's behind the sofa?

THIS POST IS FROM ROOM REMIX - THE BLOG .

womans day

Don't worry, this isn't a post about when the last time was that everyone cleaned behind their sofa! :-) We're just looking at some behind-the-sofa decorating inspiration.

In many living rooms, the sofa is against a wall and there just isn't space or really any need to have anything behind it.

myhomeideas.com

But sometimes even when your sofa is against the wall, a slim sofa table can still be an option. It provides a space for lamps when there isn't room for end tables or floor lamps, helps with accessorizing the wall and, in a larger room, allows you to move the sofa in for more intimate seating without leaving an empty space behind it.

The above idea can also be used to fill in the space behind a sofa when you're angling it in a corner. A folding screen would be another option.

They've used the same idea below of filling the extra space with a console table when trying to make the seating more intimate but, in this case, I believe there's a walkway between the table and the wall. The clever placement of the art keeps your eye from moving beyond the seating area.

Remember this CR Laine image from this post? An out-of-the-box option...

An open floor plan brings another set of options. I was taught to avoid placing a sofa in a way that you would be staring at the back of it, if possible. Once I started decorating real-life rooms, I quickly realized that many times, especially in an open floor plan, it's just not possible.

However, there are ways that you can divert attention from the sofa back...

This is actually the image that inspired me to do this post. A nicely accessorized table behind the sofa in an open space can create a room divider of sorts and a cozy, more intimate feeling to the spaces on either side of it.

homes and gardens

Having two chairs on either side of a console table is a nice option, especially if the adjoining open space is a dining room. Extra dining chairs can be placed on either side and then pulled into the dining area as needed. The addition of a lower shelf on this table allows more space for accessorizing or open storage for items that you don't mind having on display, such as books, and further distracts from the sofa back. As with some of the other images we've seen, this is also a nice spot for lamps, which are not only functional but give another level of interest, color and texture to the room.

I like Amanda Nisbet's take on what to put behind the sofa. Going with an oval table versus the standard rectangular console and using two ottomans on either side instead of chairs.

Traditional Home

In this open space, they've used a console table as a divider of sorts with a walkway on either side. An interesting idea.

Coastal Living

Another interesting idea. An accessorized bench behind the sofa...

In smaller open-plan spaces that need to be multi-functional, the back of the sofa can be used as a divider wall of sorts to create another space such as:

an office...

or a dining area/work surface. In this case, they've used a bench that can be easily tucked under for the "traffic side" of the table.

I've also seen decorative items like trunks, etc. used behind the sofa. I think it can work as long as you really pay attention to scale. Larger items and fewer of them is best or they can look lost against the back of the sofa and create a cluttered look rather than a design statement.

What's behind my sofa in my open plan home? Nothing. In fact, you can see the back of my sofa when you come in the front door because that's the best furniture placement, in my opinion, for the living room and there's no space behind to put anything to soften the transition. The sofa has a reverse camel back which creates some interest and there's plenty of room to walk around it, so you don't get the feeling that it's trying to block you from coming into the room. I'm absolutely okay with it.

I do think I might try this little trick though. A well placed throw to distract the eye...
